TR- Gamification for Libraries

Gamification is applying game design to non-game applications. Gaming is a proven tool for engagement. This is why gamification is an important trend in libraries, especially to engage new users (who are raised with computer games) with training services. During Xlibris co-design workshops a need for training on gamification was determined. Training material developed on the concept and best practices in libraries. Gamification approach used in Xlibris activities such as BookFace and Shelfie.

Trainings were provided for different groups (mainly libraraians, researchers and LIS students) between May 2015 to June 2016.

  • A half an hour presentation was made during the Project Final Event which took place in Ankara on 27th June 2016. More than hundred librarians, LIS students and researchers participated.
  • A Summer Seminar was organized as an in-service training for librarians at Hacettepe University on 15th June 2016. Twentynine librarians participated.
  • A two hours training workshop was organized at Hacettepe University for the first year students at the Department of Information Management on 9 May 2016. Sixtytwo students participated in the workshop.
  • Workshops were organized for the students of Information and Communication Sciences at Paris Descartes University, Paris, France between 14-15 October 2015. Ninetythree students participated in these workshops.
  • A one day workshop was organized at Kadir Has University Information Centre in Istanbul on 30 June 2015. Fourteen librarians participated in this workshop.

Bookface Competition at Radviliškis Gražina’s Primary School (Lithuania)

The goal was to improve schoolchildren, teachers and librarians’ use of smart ICT competences;

Objectives were:

  • to organize a digital exhibition and choose the best bookface at school
  • to attract schoolchildren to participate in the school library’s events;
  • encourage school community to use social media and smart ICT tools for educational purposes to satisfy present generations’ needs.

Egidijus Dailidonis (the trainer) was the leader of this activity, He provided the librarians, pupils and teachers with the necessary training for the use of smart ICT and social media tools. About 30 pupils and teachers participated in this competition. Teachers and pupils took photos for the exhibition of bookface, uploaded on facebook, vote for the best bookface and the best bookfaces were printed as posters which are now exhibited at the school library.

TR- Branding for Libraries

Branding for Libraries is a training service developed by Hacettepe University Department of Information Management. Although marketing is a part of curriculum branding has been a subject neglected in the curricula. Within Xlibris Project during the co-design workshops with the main target groups of the Department (LIS students and the librarians) a need for training on this theme was determined. A training service which addresses branding strategies and approaches for libraries and how to use ICT and social media tools for branding campaigns was developed. Branding campaigns were run such as Shelfie Competition and exhibitions were organized along with trainings

  • A two days workshop was organized at Kadir Has University Information Centre in Istanbul between 29-30 June 2015. First day was on Branding for Libraries and 13 librarians from several libraries in Istanbul participated in this workshop.
  • A two hours workshop was organized during QQML2015 Conference on 26-29 May 2015, in Paris, France. 11 librarians and 4 faculty (total 15 people) particiapted in this workshop from different countries.

LT- Advertising New Acqusitions

This training service aims to teach and develop librarians’ competences and skills to advertise newly acquired books and other documents on social media. Target groups are librarians (from from school and public libraries) and teachers from secondary schools. The training encourages librarians to use social media for presenting information about new acqusitons. The trainers teach how to use new approaches and techniques on social media which are more effective and convenient to receive new information. Librarians learn how to use social media tools such as Facebook, Pinterest, Flickr for this service. The trainers from Radviliškis Educational and Sport Service Centre provided individual consultations, visited school libraries and helped librarians to organize these activities from December 2015 to May 2016.

LT- Organizing Virtual Exhibitions

This training aims to teach, provide consultation and develop competences and skills for applying social media for organizing virtual exhibitions. Target groups are school and public librarians and teachers from secondary schools. Participants learn how to organize virtual exhibitions on social media, use social media in teaching/learning process, become aware of new teaching/learning approaches and techniques and use Facebook, Pinterest, Flickr effectively for organizing digital exhibitions. The trainers from Radviliškis Educational and Sport Service Centre delivered individual consultations, visited school libraries and helped librarians and teachers to organize these activities from October 2015 to May 2016.

LT- Organizing Literature Discussion Corner

This training service aims to teach, provide consultation and develop competences and skills to apply smart ICT and social media for organization of “literature discussion corner”. Target groups are school librarians, public librarians, and teachers from secondary schools. Participants learn to use social media and understand the  importance of applying social media in teaching/learning, aware of new teaching/learning approaches and techniques on social media which makes learning more effective, gain the knowledge of how to use Facebook for writing book reviews. The trainers from Radviliškis Educational and Sport Service Centre provided individual consultations, visited school libraries and helped librarians and teachers to organize these activities from February to May 2016.

LT- Organizing Interactive Classes

This training aims to teach and develop competences and skills to apply smart ICT and social media for organization of interactive literature, cultural and arts classes. The target groups are teachers and librarians. The training includes the understanding of how to use social media in teaching/learning, knowledge of how to use Skype in the classes, awareness of new teaching/learning approaches and techniques which make learning more effective, and encourage participants to organize non-traditional classes. The trainers from Radviliškis Educational and Sport Service Centre delivered individual consultations, visited school libraries and helped librarians and teachers to organize this activity from February to May 2016.

DE- Activation of Users Through Social Media

After the in-service training the librarian started to use Facebook not only to give information and news about the library, as for example on newly arrived media, but also to get into contact with the users for example regarding the name of the storch in the new logo or their favourite books. It is also planned to let the users discuss on the Facebook site which new books to buy depending on the number of users who would like to have a particular book and the explanation why the library should have it. LT- In-service Training Programme

In-service training programme consists of 40 hours and aims to develop competences and skills for the use of smart ICT and social media for educational purposes. The target groups are school and public librarians as well as teachers from pre-school, secondary and vocational schools. The programme helps to develop understanding the importance of utilization of social media in teaching/learning to satisfy needs and expectations of young generation; the knowledge of how to apply smart ICT and social media creating an attractive teaching/learning environment, and encourage educators to create modern, more effective educational environment. The programme strengthens participants’ cooperative and communicative competences. Two training workshops were organized in Radviliškis educational and sport service centre: First one was for school librarians in the district in June 2015 and 14 school librarians participated. Second one was for school teachers from gymnasium and basic schools in October 2015 and 17 teachers were participated. The in-service training programme has been accredited and is presented to implement in the national level.

DE- In-service Training on Social Media

In order to be able to activate the users through social media the librarian took part in an individual in-service training on how to use social media provided by wisamar Bildungsgesellschaft gemeinnützige GmbH. Due to the fact that Facebook is the most widely used social media in the area, the training focused on this particular social medium. Facebook-Sites of other German libraries have been analyzed and based on that ideas have been developed in which way to use Facebook effectively and how to engage users actively. The Facebook strategy for the library Kabelsketal established during the training includes presentating general information about the library including opening hours, closing dates, new arrived books; initiating a competition on the name of the new mascot in the logo; using the storch as mascot posting on the site; encouraging users to present their favourite books. The training took place as face-to-face training.
